Damara from East Chambers Jr. High is a true Buc—after a recent track meet, she grabbed a trash bag and cleaned up the visitor stands, no one asked. Her kindness impressed a neighboring district so much they bought her lunch and awarded her a Buc Coin!
Thank you, Damara, for leading with respect, responsibility, and pride! 👏

This week, we’re featuring 2nd grade teacher Shelly Henderson, who believes learning should be more than worksheets and quiet rows — it should be active, meaningful, and memorable. In her classroom, students don’t just learn… they experience it. 📚💡
What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe students learn best when learning is an experience—active, meaningful, and rooted in real life rather than confined to passive absorption of information. Education should invite students to explore, question, create, and reflect. When students engage directly with ideas through discussion, collaboration, problem-solving, and hands-on application, they construct knowledge in ways that are lasting and transformative.
What’s your favorite ‘lightbulb moment’ you see in students?
I love when students make connections between prior knowledge and new knowledge. Seeing students recognize their own growth and successfully transfer their understanding across contexts is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching.
What do you love about teaching at ECISD?
There truly is no place like ECISD. What I love most about teaching here is that every decision is made with students and teachers at the center. You can feel it in the support we receive, the resources we’re provided, and the way our voices matter. ECISD invests in its educators, giving us meaningful opportunities to grow, learn, and lead.
Beyond that, it feels like family. There is a culture of encouragement, collaboration, and shared purpose that makes coming to work something I genuinely look forward to.
🌟 When learning is hands-on and hearts are invested, growth follows. We’re grateful for teachers like Mrs. Henderson who create classrooms where curiosity thrives and students build knowledge that lasts. 💚💛

School diagnosticians work behind the scenes to help identify student needs, support teachers, and ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed. Their work requires expertise, patience, and a heart for students.
We’re grateful for the impact Beverly Hill, our diagnostician, makes every day for our Buccaneers. 💚💛⚓️

Experience the Buccaneer Difference 💚💛
As a part of our crew, all ECISD teachers are eligible to participate in the Teacher Incentive Allotment program.
East Chambers ISD has a fully approved local designation system submitted to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to participate in this process.
We are proud to share that 46 of our teachers have earned designations. TIA was created by the Texas Legislature as part of House Bill 3 to help recruit, retain, and reward effective educators in the classroom at high-needs campuses. The TIA provides additional funding to eligible teachers who earn local designations through this allotment system.
ECISD teachers are eligible for a higher allotment based on the district’s demographics and location.

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on one of our incredible PreK4 teachers, Mrs. Kristina Yonker, who is building strong foundations, nurturing big hearts, and proving that even our smallest learners can have the “best day ever.” From creating a classroom family to helping students grow in independence and kindness, her impact reaches far beyond the classroom walls. 💚💛
What is your teaching philosophy?
In the teaching profession, the pendulum is always swinging. Curriculum and ideas about the best teaching methods are constantly changing. However, the overall goal of student success is a constant. No matter the resources provided or methods used, I will do my best to meet each student’s needs. Every student is different. You have to build a relationship with each one. They all have to feel loved and safe in the school environment in order to be successful academically. That is why my teaching philosophy is centered around building a school family in the classroom and doing my best to make learning fun and engaging. Every day can have the “best day ever” feel when you are surrounded by family.
What’s your favorite ‘lightbulb moment’ you see in students?
I love the “lightbulb” moments when a student asks for help, then discovers they can do it on their own. Teaching Pre-K, it is fun to see students learn skills that help them be independent with daily tasks. I also love when students start to recognize others’ feelings and suggest strategies while offering support and comfort. I enjoy listening to students tell me that they offered strategies at home or outside of the school setting when they noticed a need. It is very heartwarming to know that I am helping to instill a love for others in my students.
What do you love about teaching at ECISD?
I LOVE teaching at ECISD for so many reasons. I have been in other schools where walking down the halls felt cold and unwelcoming. ECP is the complete opposite. You are greeted with a smile or kind words every day. Our staff and teachers go out of their way to make everyone feel loved and welcomed. We are family. I can’t imagine teaching anywhere else. It’s always a GREAT DAY to be a BUC!
💡 Our future starts in classrooms just like this one — where students feel safe, supported, and excited to learn. Thank you for pouring your heart into our youngest Buccaneers and reminding us that big success often begins with small steps. ⚓💚💛
