selected. During the

Band Receives Superior Ratinigs |
|
The EC Junior High Band competed
in the Anahuac Pre-UIL
competition and received a
Superior Performance from all
three judges. The first division
performance earned the students
the Showcase of Music
Festival trophy.

Annual Career
Day Held for Eighth Grade Students |
|
On February 23, 2011, East
Chambers Junior High held its
annual Career Day for eighth
grade students. The event began
with an assembly and Mr. Mark
Viator of Partnership Strategies
spoke on how to become a good
employee and what employers look
for in employees. Then students
met professionals from various
career fields who spoke on the
future opportunities that
education creates. Students
heard 20 professionals speak
about their workplace,
education, skills, and personal
stories.

Junior Honor Society Collects
Stuffed Animals |
NJHS has been collecting stuffed
animals for the Chambers County
Sheriffs Department as their
service project for the month of
January. Sheriff Joe LaRive,
District Attorney Cheryl Lieck,
and DARE officer Nachelle Bonin
accepted the collection on
behalf of Chambers County.

Whitney DeYoung are the

Selected National Sunday School
Teacher of the Year |

Pastor Griffin of
Cornerstone Church nominated
John Johnson for the South
District Teacher of the
Year, and Mr. Johnson was
selected to receive this
honor. All district winners
were then nominated
for the National Teacher of
the Year award which Mr.
Johnson was also selected to
receive.
Since 1995, the National
Sunday School Office has
awarded the Billie Davis
Award for Excellence in
Christian Education to
Sunday School teachers who
faithfully contribute to a
high standard of
discipleship as they teach
God’s Word to God’s people. |

The Billie Davis Award of
Excellence in Christian
Education was named after and
first presented to Dr. Billie
Davis, author and Christian
educator, who has given many
years of her life to uplifting
the teaching ministry in the
church.

Assembly |

Fifth through eighth grade

first incentive assembly of
the year today, November 9,
2010. During the first six
weeks, students who were on
the A, A-B honor rolls
and/or had perfect
attendance had their names
submitted for the
possibility of being drawn
for incentive prizes. There
were 25 prizes available,
and 25 drawings were held.
Prizes included a variety of
educational and
thought-provoking games. |

Renee Brawner, who teaches
8th Grade Science at East
Chambers Junior High, has
been chosen to receive
The Environmental
Education Award
which is presented to an
organization or individual
for outstanding efforts in
bringing environmental
awareness to the classroom.
Mrs. Brawner is responsible
for the outdoor classroom at
Crenshaw School and at East
Chambers ISD.Since 1997, the
Citizens’ Environmental
Coalition has hosted the
annual Synergy Awards
Luncheon in Houston to
recognize local individuals
and organizations for their
notable environmental
projects and achievements.
Mrs. Brawner will be
recognized at the luncheon
on November 3 at the Houston
Racquet Club.

The National Junior Honor
Society (NJHS) is one of the
nation's premier organizations
established to recognize middle
level students. More than just
an honor roll, NJHS serves to
honor those students who have
demonstrated excellence in the
areas of Scholarship,
Leadership, Service, Character,
and Citizenship. These
characteristics have been
associated with membership in
the organization since its
beginnings in 1929.
The 2010-2011 NJHS members were

Grade Student Receives State
Recognition |

Jacob Sims, an East Chambers
Junior High 7th grade
student, has received State
Recognition by the Duke
University Talent
Identification Program.
Students are selected to
participate in the Talent
Search and take the SAT or
ACT based on a high level of
achievement on the TAKS
test. To be recognized at
the state level, a seventh
grade student must score
above average (50%) for high
school juniors and seniors
on the SAT or the ACT tests.
A student qualifying for
State Recognition is in the
top 30% of the Talent Search
pool for the entire nation.
Jacob will be honored at a
ceremony held at Lamar
University on Saturday May
22nd. |

High and Intermediate Enjoy TAKS
Pep Rally |
 |
Junior High and Intermediate
students have been preparing for
their TAKS tests all year, and
they had the opportunity to get
a break from their studies in
the form of a pep rally. The
"survivor" style pep rally was
held Monday, April 26, 2010, in
the junior high gym. Students
enjoyed participating in various
grade-level games, as well as
enjoyed the festive atmosphere
and teacher participation, as
well as words of encouragement
from Principal Rainey. |

Therapy
Dog in Training |
|
On Monday, March 22, the
Therapy Dog in Training
program began at East
Chambers Junior High. Gypsy
was officially introduced to
5th-8th graders at an
assembly. Students were
given instructions on how to
approach Gypsy, give her
“hugs and kisses," and
treats. She will work
primarily with Mrs.
Shepherd’s classes to get
acclimated to a school
setting. She will come to
school a couple of days each
week to continue the
training process. Gypsy’s
first day of school was a
huge success; she has
performed her duties well
and enjoyed all the love and
attention she got from “her”
EC students.

2009 Conservation Poster
Winners Selected |
|
Each year students from East
Chambers participate in the
Trinity Bay Soil and Water
Conservation District's
poster contest. The theme
for the 2009 poster contest
was “Dig-it” The Secrets of
Soil, which covered the
resource that truly is this
nation’s foundation - soil.
The poster entries were
judged at the local level by
the Trinity Bay Soil and
Water Conservation District
#434 with winners being
sent on to area-level
competition. Ultimately, the
state winner will be
selected from the winners of
the five area competitions.
The poster contest is designed
to demonstrate the importance of
conservation and taking care of
one’s surroundings while giving
contestants an opportunity to
express their artistic ability.
This year's local winners of the
conservation poster contest are
1st place, Sonia Netro; 2nd
place, Maegan Sonnier, and 3rd
place, Yuliana Sosa, all 5th
grade students at East Chambers
Intermediate School. Their
sponsoring teacher is Mrs.
Kristy Little.

OAP Wins Honors |
|
Members of the
East Chambers Junior High
One-Act Play, All in Disguise,
a “Tour de Farce” in Commedia
Style, competed for
district in
Kountze on February 17, 2010.
All in Disguise is a
fast-paced escapade which
follows the adventures and
misadventures of Pipporello and
Marco, two vagabonds, as they
breeze along in search of
riches, romance and – their next
meal.
The performance was chosen first
place play among the
competition. Individual honors
were also awarded for Best
Actress: Lucita Rodriguez as
Signora Pantalone; Best Actor:
Jaxon Vanya as Pipporello;
All-star Cast: Tristan Bertrand
as Flavio; Taylor Wheat as
Florinda; James Lowrance as
Marco, Kristen Rodriguez as
Colombina (honorable mention);

Grade Banquet Held on Saturday -

The Adelia Wilcox Chapter of
the National Junior Honor
Society hosted the Eighth
Grade Banquet on
Saturday, May 16, 2009, in the Winnie-Stowell
Community Building. Eighth grade
students were honored and
recognized with various
accolades. This year's
outstanding eighth grade boy
was Glenn Roberts, and
outstanding eighth grade
girl was Zoë Zbranek.
Highest ranking boy was
Ethan Hughes, and highest
ranking girl was Zoë
Zbranek. A
dance was held immediately
after the banquet.

were received in all. Miss
Zbranek was presented with a
trophy and a $50 savings bond as
the overall first place winner. |

Receive Science Lesson in
Thermodynamics |
|
The RE/MAX hot air balloon
program was brought to EC
students in order to
teach them about the
physics of why hot air
rises, how hot air becomes
less dense, and what happens
to the molecules during this
process while at the same
time being introduced to
man's first
form of flight - the hot air
balloon. The hot air balloon
is the prefect teaching aid
that adds excitement to the
lesson of thermodynamics.
Students had the opportunity
to walk by the basket
and look inside and up into
the balloon before gathering
behind the balloon for the
presentation. More

Intermediate and Junior High
Talent Show, "EC Solid Gold"
was held on May 14, 2009.
Attendees were entertained
by a variety of acts from
singing, dancing, playing
musical instruments to
learning how to apply
makeup. The show's emcees
were Kirstie Thompson and
Jase Vanya. Mrs. Sabrina
Ashworth organized the
program with help from Mr.
Dennis DeMoss and students
Micah Frugia and Emily
McKnight.

ECJH Students
Qualify for State Recognition |
|
In the fall of 2008, ECJH 7th
grade students who qualified for
the Duke University Talent
Identification program were
announced. Students who wished
could continue with further
testing to qualify for State or
National Recognition.
ECISD is
pleased to announce that two of
our students, Andrew McGovern
and Blane Rhodes, have qualified
to be recognized on the state
level. A recognition program
will be held in May at Lamar
University which these students
will be attending. |

Sixth
Graders Integrate Technology
with Writing Skills |

Students in Mrs. Lavergne's 6th
grade creative writing classes
have been designing interactive
stories that allow the reader to
decide which path is taken to
ultimately control the plot.
Students had to incorporate
writing skills, creativity,
keyboarding, multimedia skills,
and presentation skills.

The Junior High One-Act
Play, DINNY AND THE WITCHES,
was performed in competition
at the 23-AA Festival of
Plays on Wednesday, January
28. Other schools competing
included Warren Junior High,
Buna Junior High, and
Kountze Middle School.
ECJH's show was judged first
place winning play.
Acting awards went to BEST
ACTRESS Zoë Zbranek, BEST
ACTOR Jaxon Vanya, and
ALL-STAR CAST MEMBERS Ciara
Starcke and Nichole Mayeux. |
Other cast members included

Neuman. Set assistance was
provided by Jarred Lezak,

Discovery Dome Presentations |
|
The Discovery Dome came to the
intermediate and junior high
campus to engage students in an
interactive science environment.
The Discovery Dome is a portable
full-dome theater surrounding
students with immersive,
engaging, and realistic
programs. Developed by the
Houston Museum of Natural
Science and Rice University, the
new theater offers a
state-of-the-art visual learning
experience.
East Chambers 5th through 7th
graders viewed the Cosmic
Questions program which
explored the sun, moon, and the
other planets of our solar
system. Moon phases, seasons,
and eclipses were observed.
Eighth grade students viewed
The Body Code program which
explored the carotid artery,
eye, brain, ear, and heart. In
addition students discovered how
DNA programs the body's cells to
form the circulatory and nervous
systems.

qualify for participation through
the Duke University Talent
Identification Program (TIP). The
