ECHS Academic Banquet Held

The Annual ECHS Academic Banquet was held Monday night, May 10, 2010, at the community building. Students, faculty, staff, and attendees enjoyed a meal prior to recognizing students for their academic accomplishments. The valedictorian and salutatorian were revealed, as well as honor graduates, top ten percent of each class, Mr. and Miss ECHS, Who's Who, and outstanding student performances in UIL and class subjects.

The Class of 2010's valedictorian is Brandi Stevens, and salutatorian is Kaci Bull. Miss ECHS is Shelby Franzen, and Mr. ECHS is Shantrey Glenn. Graduation is scheduled for Friday, May 21, 2010, at 7:00 p.m.

ECHS One-Act Play Wins Second Place at State Meet

The One-Act Play cast and crew traveled to the University of Texas' Hogg Auditorium in Austin to compete on Friday night, May 7, 2010, at the state level of competition. The Last Night of Ballyhoo directed by Dennis DeMoss was one of 214 plays from 2A competition that began their journey with zones, district, area, regional and finally state competition. The performance was the last play of the night with awards not beginning until 12:10 am. East Chambers play won second place as the first runners up.

In addition, individual awards went to Carson Campbell who won Best Actress along with Taylor Reddell and Kaci Bull who were chosen to the All-Star Cast.  Also, Zoe Zbranek was awarded Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. Other cast members were Dallas Gibson, Kayla King, and Kyle White.

Crew and alternates were Micah Frugia, Heather Harrison, Ethan Hughes, Jared Matlock, Emily McKnight, Sadie Long, Paige Miller, and Chase Olivier.

There will be one final community performance on Sunday, May 23, at 4:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Regional UIL Academic Competition Results

Regional UIL academic competition was held April 23 - 24, 2010, in Tyler. East Chambers High School was well-represented with competitors in several contests. The results were:  Kelli Neuman – 1st News Writing, 2nd Headline, 1st Journalism Team, advances to State; Carson Campbell – 1st Prose, advances to State; Mallory Franzen – 8th Prose; Ben Wilchek – 4th Computer Applications; Laci Breaux  - 8th Computer Applications; Zach Clark  - Quarter Finals in Lincoln Douglas Debate.

The One-Act Play was chosen to advance to State and is set for Session 2, last play to perform on May 7. Individual awards were: Carson Campbell - All-Star Cast; Kayla King - All-Star Cast; Zoe Zbranek - All-Star Cast Honorable Mention; Kaci Bull - All-Star Cast Honorable Mention; Micah Frugia - Tech Award.

OAP Advances to Regional Competition

The ECHS One-Act Play competed in the area round of UIL competition in Jasper last weekend, and was chosen to advance to regional competition to be held on Friday, April 23, 2010, in Tyler.

Individual awards received were as follows: Best Actress: Carson Campbell; All-Star Cast: Kayla King and Zoe Zbranek; Honorable Mention: Taylor Reddell and Dallas Gibson.

One-Act Play Wins District and Advances to Area
OAP District Winners

One-Act Play competition was held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, and it concluded the District Academic Contest with East Chamber's  play advancing to area competition. After all results were tabulated, East Chambers has won the overall district meet with 520 points. Coming in second place was Buna with 347 points.

 

Cast members of "The Last Night Of Ballyhoo" directed by Dennis DeMoss are Carson Campbell, Kaci Bull, Dallas Gibson, Kayla King, Taylor Redell, Kyle White, and Zoe Zbranek. Alternates and crew members are Ethan Hughes, Heather Harrison, Sadie Long, Jared Matlock, Chase Olivier, Paige Miller, Micah Frugia, Colby Touchet, and Emily McKnight. Individual awards are:  Best Actor: Taylor Reddell; Best Actress: Carson Campbell; All-Star Cast: Kaci Bull, Kayla King, and Zoe Zbranek; Best Crew: Ethan Hughes.

East Chambers' One-Act Play will be competing Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Jasper High School for area competition. The plays will run back to back starting at 1:00 p.m. with EC being the second play. It was suggested by the area coordinator for EC fans to be in their seats by 1:45 p.m. There will be no late entry for any of the plays. There will be a $3.00 admission charge regardless if you see one play or all of them. We have been asked by the area director to remind fans that cell phones and small children can be a distraction to play performance. Also, leaving while a play is performing is not acceptable either. Poor theater etiquette is a reportable offense that can be reported to the UIL offices. Please come and support our winning play!

ECHS Leading District UIL Academic Meet

East Chambers was once again the host for the District UIL Academic Meet. The first day of competition was March 22. According to Kandy McBride, East Chambers' UIL Coordinator, the results going into Thursday's competition was as follows:  East Chambers 330 points; Buna 199; Anahuac 167; Warren 138; Hardin 71; Deweyville 59; and Kountze 55. These totals also included the points from CX-Debate which was held in January.

After Thursday's competition, the final totals were:  EC 472, Buna 317, Anahuac 196, Warren 154, Hardin 85, Deweyville 67, and Kountze 63, making East Chambers the overall leaders going into the OAP competition scheduled for March 31..

Individual results from Thursday, March 25, are as follows:  Persuasive Speaking - 4th Zoe Zbranek, 6th Kirstie Thompson; Informative Speaking - 2nd Jared Matlock, 3rd Ethan Hughes, 4th Zach Clark; Poetry  - 2nd Zoe Zbranek, 5th Heather Harrison; Prose - 1st Carson Campbell, 2nd Mallory Franzen, 4th Dallas Gibson; LD Debate - 1st Zachary Clark, 2nd Kyle Norris, 3rd Kyle White.

ECHS's second place Social Studies team has made the Wild Card at UIL Academic Regionals. The team members are Xavier Broussard, Sadie Long, Austin Jackson, and Gloria Ramirez. This means they will now compete at the regional meet.


ECHS Students Participate in State CX-Debate Tournament
CX State Debate

Austen Gilfillian and Lesley Valastro traveled to the University of Texas at Austin on March 14-15 to participate in the State CX-Debate Tournament. This was the second consecutive year the team advanced to the state tournament. After winning their first two rounds, they were power ranked against other 2-0 debaters. In close competition, they fell to the eventual 2nd place championship team from Blanco.

This year's topic was "Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase social services for persons living in poverty in the United States." Mrs. Beth Glenn is their coach.

 


Students Place at Sabine Pass UIL Academic Meet

East Chambers High School students participated in the Sabine Pass Invitational UIL Academic Meet on Saturday, March 6, 2010. Results were as follows:  Literary Criticism – 4th place Sadie Long, News Writing  - 6th place Lesley Valastro, Computer Applications – 5th place Lesley Valastro, Poetry – 3rd place Zoe Zbranek, and Prose – 2nd place Carson Campbell and 5th place Dallas Gibson.


ECHS Students Place in PN-G Academic Meet

On February 6, 2010, East Chambers High School students competed in Port Neches-Groves' UIL Invitational Academic Meet. East Chambers was the only 2A school participating and  competing along side 3A, 4A, and 5A schools. In the Poetry competition, Zoe Zbranek received 1st place, and Heather Harrison was awarded 5th place. These young ladies took 2 out of the 6 places awarded in that contest with a total of 30 contestants competing from area schools.

Dennis DeMoss Selected to Receive Education Award

The Winnie Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual Chamber Banquet honoring outstanding individuals and businesses from our area on Monday, February 8, 2010. Mr. Dennis DeMoss, an English, Communication Applications, and Theater Arts teacher at East Chambers High School has been selected to receive the Education Award. Mr. DeMoss is in his tenth year of teaching at ECHS. He is a graduate of East Peoria High School in Illinois and Lamar University. In addition to his teaching assignments, Mr. DeMoss also coaches several UIL events including One-Act Play.

Mr. DeMoss's one-act play performances have garnered 8 consecutive district championships, 6 regional advancements, and 2 state showings in 2005 with The Miracle Worker, and in 2008 with The Diary of Anne Frank.

Other 2010 honorees include Outstanding Business - East Chambers County Bank; Agriculture Award - Bobby Thornton; Community Service - Nolan George; and Outstanding Citizen - R.J. and Ray Henrichson.

The social and silent auction will begin at 6:00 p.m., and the dinner will begin at 6:45 p.m. at the Winnie-Stowell Community Building. Tickets are $20 per person and must be purchased before February 4. Contact the chamber office at 296.2231 or any chamber director for tickets.


ECHS Wins District CX-Debate and Advances to State
1st place CX Debate team

On January 27, 2010, ECHS hosted the 23AA District Cross Examination Meet. Teams from East Chambers placed 1st and 4th securing 30 points in the first district competition for this year. First place team was comprised of Lesley Valastro and Austen Gilfillian; fourth place team was Chase Olivier and Jasta Alicie. Other team members competing were Jared Lacombe and Tanner Mazzola. EC had two teams place after qualifying in the prelim rounds and advancing to semi-finals and finals. Lesley and Austen will be representing East Chambers and our district at the state meet to be held in Austin on March 15-16. Buna will also be advancing to state as the second place team. Mrs. Beth Glenn is East Chambers'  coach.


ECHS Students Attend H-F UIL Meet

ECHS students attended the Hamshire-Fannett Invitational UIL Meet on January 8-9, 2010. Results were as follows:  Science - 5th place Charles Olivier, 6th place Taylor Reddell. Charles Olivier placed 2nd as Top Biology; ECHS science team composed of Charles Olivier, Taylor Reddell, Zoe Zbranek, and Sara Bertrand were awarded 2nd place Science Team. Poetry - 1st place Zoe Zbranek. Prose - 1st place Carson Campbell. Computer Applications - 5th Laci Breaux, 6th Ben Wilchek. Editorial Writing - 3rd Place Ariana Ashworth.

The 2009 Homecoming Festivities revealed Devinn LaRive as queen and Jon Yawn as king. Jace Silcox was chosen band beau, and Leticia Chavez was selected band sweetheart.

The Homecoming Game against the Warren Warriors will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009. The pre-game ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm honoring the past queens from these graduating classes: 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000. The 2009-2010 Homecoming Queen will be crowned at the half-time show. A pep rally will be held in Buccaneer Stadium at 2:45 pm on Friday afternoon. We hope to see all of the Buccaneer Ex-Students supporting the Mighty Bucs!

Junior Girls Beat Senior Girls in Powder Puff Football Game

Project Graduation sponsored a powder puff football game to raise money, and the game was held at Buccaneer Stadium Monday night, November 2, 2009.

The game offered spectators a full range of excitement from the plays on the field to the "unique" performances by the cheerleaders and drill team. Although both teams traded possession several times, the juniors prevailed and beat the seniors 14-0.

HS StuCo Attends Fall Convention

The East Chambers High School student council attended the TASC District 17 Fall Convention at the Beaumont Civic Center on Wednesday, October 14. The theme of the conference was the same as the state's theme, “The time is now, our world, our responsibility." The guest speaker was a representative from the group Love is Respect. In the afternoon sessions, the students were released to join discussion groups to share thoughts on improving student government at their respective schools. Junior class members were unable to attend due to taking the PSAT.
