Otto Chosen as New Elementary Principal
Sarah Otto Chosen as Elementary Principal

East Chambers ISD recently announced the hiring of a new elementary principal at the last school board meeting held on April 8, 2010. Sarah Otto was chosen to replace long-time principal, Vicki Bauer. Sarah comes to the job with 5 years teaching and coaching experience, and is a graduate of Lamar University and the University of Texas at Austin. Otto graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and taught 2nd grade for Austin ISD in Austin, Texas, before moving to Winnie.

While at East Chambers, Sarah has taught junior high science and coached junior high girls athletics.

She has also served the district in many capacities as an interpreter because of her conversational skills in Spanish; all while maintaining a home with her husband, Charles Otto, who is also a teacher and coach at East Chambers, and their house full of dogs and cats.

Otto attained a master’s degree in Educational Administration with a principal certification from Lamar University in 2009, and continued to pursue a second master’s degree in Counseling and Development. She currently serves as the Counselor for East Chambers Junior High and Intermediate where she has developed a great working rapport with students, parents, community, and administration.

ECE Students Attend Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show

East Chambers Elementary students were treated to a character education assembly program on March 29 in the school cafeteria. The Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show is performed by Tim and Laura Allured, who hail from Lafayette, Louisiana. They are a frantic and frenetic couple with a lot of visual gags and slapstick. It's like a variety show - part puppet show with appearances by Harvey Rabbit, Cecil the Orangutan, and T-Boy the Alligator, and part magic show, with plenty of music and dancing in between and costume changes.

Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show
Students and teachers alike pledged to make East Chambers Elementary a Golden Rule School where respect, kindness, empathy, cheerfulness, and forgiveness are demonstrated every day.

“Harvey Rabbit always has a message that the students look forward to hearing and seeing,” stated Vicki Bauer, Principal. “This is the third year the students were treated to Tim and Laura Allured’s fun-filled message, and the show is always entertaining and different.”

Outdoor Discovery Center Workday
Outdoor Center Workday

Thirty-two volunteers comprised of students, staff, and community workers braved freezing temperatures, wind, and standing water to plant 200 plants and trees in the Outdoor Discovery Center which is roughly a two-acre area that is being transformed into a habitat for native plants and animals. Ron Jones of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was on hand with shovels to lead the group. He taught the volunteers the correct method for planting trees and plants, and also answered questions.

Hot cocoa and donuts warmed cold bellies and tired hands. Students from the elementary that participated were treated to a Sonic lunch the following Monday. For information on how you can get involved, please contact Elissa Jordan at the elementary by email at ejordan@eastchambers.net.

Student Safety A Priority:  No Flip-Flops

Students in elementary grades abide by a campus dress code that does not allow students to wear flip-flops.  The reason is simple:  Student Safety. Young children are very active during P.E. and recess; in the past we have had several injuries due to students wearing shoes that were not safe during physical activities. We appreciate the effort on your part in helping us enforce this safety measure.

Shoes should not detract or interfere with the learning environment or present a safety or health hazard.  Students may not wear cleats, slippers, thongs, backless sandals or flip-flops.  All shoes must have straps around the back of the shoe. For safety and health reasons, shoes must be tied or fastened according to the shoe style.  No Flip-Flops
