Although the state of Texas does not require districts to employ a school nurse, and many schools do not have one, ECISD chooses to employ a registered nurse because it recognizes the importance of looking out after the health of the district's students which ultimately affects their learning environment.

Below can be found information regarding the various screenings in which ECISD participates
:

  • Fitnessgram

The Texas School Health Advisory Council, with support from the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Education Agency, has compiled a FITNESSGRAM Guide for Parents and Guardians that includes helpful documents. This guide will help parents understand the requirements, justifications, and implementation strategies surrounding the physical fitness assessment initiative for students in grades 3-12 in the state of Texas.

Please review the resource and utilize it to meet your needs whether parent, student, or educator.

(Parents may request, in writing, their child's physical fitness assessment results at the end of the school year.)

  • Vision & Hearing

All children 4 years old through the 5th grade will have their vision and hearing screened each school year. In addition 7th graders are also screened. This is a basic screening and parents/guardians will be notified if the child needs further evaluation. Screenings are usually done in the fall.

  • Scoliosis

All children going into the 6th and 9th grades will have a scoliosis screening to check for abnormal development of the spine or back. This is usually done in the spring and involves a visual check of the student's back to determine abnormal curvatures of the spine.

  • Acanthosis Nigricans

Students in 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades will be screened for Acanthosis Nigricans. This screening is a visual check of the back of the neck and elbow creases for a skin condition related to high insulin levels in the body. Persons with a darkened line or crease on the back of the neck are believed to be at risk for type II diabetes because the insulin in their bodies is not acting as it should. If a student is found to have this dark, velvety skin marker, he/she will also have their height and weight and blood pressure screened. If these screenings show any abnormality, the student will be referred for further evaluation. This screening is also done in the spring along with the scoliosis checks.
